Madrid is synonymous of music, culture, theater, party, art and creativity. So, in this month’s blog we are going to present the most important theaters of the great capital, and of course the musicals they offer. I can assure you that you will enjoy it to the fullest!

This February arrives loaded with incredible plans in a dreamy city. Mad4You Hostel brings you a proposal that you cannot refuse, a route through the best theaters in the city, from the oldest and most prestigious to the smallest and most charming. And as always, it is a good idea to see a musical while you shelter from the cold. Don´t miss out!

Theater Coliseum of Madrid

It is part of the Coliseum building, one of the most important on the Gran Vía street. Although it is mainly a theater where musicals are presented, there are also comedies, monologues, humor, dance and lyric shows. The Coliseum theater has more than seventy years of history. It opened its doors for the first time in 1932 as a cinema. During the Civil War, it was used as a warehouse for military equipment. After years closed, it returned to function as a theater in 2000. It is so well-known because it does not stop to fascinate us with the best plays. At this moment the theater offers the musical “Anastasia”.

Without a doubt, you cannot miss this musical, it is inspiring and exciting. Anastasia the musical transports us from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the twenties.

Anastasia narrates the exciting adventure of the Romanov’s youngest daughter who, according to legend, escaped from the Bolshevik revolution and traveled from St. Petersburg to Paris, to find her true identity there, and become the owner of her destiny.

Lope de Vega Theater

Thanks to its spectacular size, it specializes in musicals: in fact, it currently houses the most important and veteran musical, “The Lion King.”

A curious fact is that the building was built in 1949, and at the time it had an underground shopping center, called by the same name “Lope the Vega”. Until 1997 it was transformed into the cathedral of musicals that it is today. Some of the shows that have amazed us during all this time have been Beauty and the Beast, The Phantom of the Opera, Mamma Mia and Les Misérables. So, we could say that this theater has turned Gran Vía into the Spanish Broadway.

You can see the “Lion King” at the Lope de Vega Theater represented since 2011. It is the longest-running musical in the history of the Madrid billboard and for us the best musical of Madrid at the moment and one of the best in history. It is a musical for the whole family although a minimum age of six years is recommended, but do not think it is a musical only for children.

A unique show loaded with family values, which demonstrates the connection of each of us with our roots. EL REY LEÓN makes the viewer reflect on the importance of each of our actions and the effect they cause in our environment, as well as the importance of feeling that we belong to a group. Are you going to check it out?

Theater Nuevo Apolo

During its 80 years of existence this theater has premiered shows of very varied repertoire: musicals, dance, theater, family shows, flamenco, circus, zarzuela, concerts …

Located in the center of Madrid, on the square of Plaza de Tirso de Molina, three hundred meters from Puerta del Sol. It is very well connected with the rest of the town and offers the public a program of great variety of technical and artistic quality. In short, to bring the magic of the theater to everyone’s reach.

Perhaps you wonder why we mention this theater in our monthly blog? Apart of making national and international productions, we must mention it because right now you can enjoy the musical “Flashdance”, which represents one of the most iconic films of the 80’s. It is a musical about the struggle of everything that inspires you to achieve and be everything you desire.

Flashdance tells the inspiring story of Alex Owens, an 18-year-old girl, welder by day and exotic dancer at night, who dreams of going to the prestigious Shipley Dance Academy and becoming a professional dancer. When a romance complicates her ambitions, she takes advantage of it to boost her dream, but not before overcoming obstacles and conflicts that will test her determination.

Royal Theatre

It is one of the ten most important theaters in the world and it is dedicated exclusively to dance and opera shows. It is one of the most important cultural institutions in the whole country and, in just over fifteen years of history, it has managed to stand out both nationally and internationally.  Therefore, if you are an opera lover, this is your place. This theater is very special, with an excellent choir and orchestra. It also highlights the use of the most innovative technologies, to offer its audience functions of great category, which they will enjoy to the fullest.

This month, till the 24th, we can enjoy the production of “La flauta Mágica” (The magic flute). It is inspired by silent movies, by stage director Barrie Kosky.

The production presents Prince Tamino, who, chased by a snake, enters the territory of the Queen of the Night. She appears to him and asks him to rescue his daughter Pamina, kidnapped by the evil Sarastro. Tamino accepts the challenge on the condition of marrying her, but soon he will realize that evil is really embodied by the Queen of the Night and not Sarastro.

Lara Theatre

In Madrid there are many theaters throughout the city, but the Lara theater is one of the most historic in all of Madrid. It is very close to Plaza de Callao. The easiest way to get there is using the metro line 5 to the Callao stop. Once there, you just have to go to Plaza de la Luna and then enter the street of Corredera Baja de San Pablo and find this wonderful place.

A theater with over a hundred years of history that maintains a varied quality programming, that also accommodates music, poetry and other artistic expressions.

Tickets can be obtained both at the box office and on their website, since they always have several functions from which viewers can choose. Don´t miss out!
