Taste is different per person but we do not know anybody who does not like the food of Spain. We feel very lucky to live in Madrid and to be able to have the most delicious food for very reasonable prices just on our doorstep!

In this month´s blog we are recommending you some of our favorite places to have drinks and try the delicious food Madrid has to offer.

Tapas Bar: Bar Sidrería El Tigre – Calle de las Infantas, 30

You can visit El Tigre once, twice or even three times but every time we are amazed about the amount of food they are giving away. El Tigre is the typical Spanish bar where you order a drink and get loads of food for ¨free¨ (including with your drink). We believe El Tigre is offering the biggest tapas of Madrid. Examples of their generous tapas are patatas bravas (potatoes with brava souce), pieces of bread with jamon Serrano or manchego cheese and croquetas. As long as you keep order drinks, the food will keep on coming.

Veggie: Sanissimo – Calle San Vicente Ferrer, 28

This healthy place is literally around the corner of Mad4You Hostel. Their focus is offering healthy and tasty food for a very reasonable price. We love their veggie burgers and  veggie wraps, bagels and fresh juices. You can order and take away and eat your food at their small restaurant. Definitely a must for all vegetarians and vegans!

Vegan: El Vega – Calle La Luna, 9

You can also find the vegan restaurant El Vega in our neighborhood called Malasaña, very close to Mad4You Hostel. It is a restaurant specialized in vegan food and they offer very innovative and delicious plates. Their daily menu is a very cheap and healthy option; it includes a drink, first course, main course and a dessert, and for only two euros more you can add another main course. Additionally, their space is intimate and well preserved. Definitely worth a try!

Alternative: 80 Grados – Calle Manuela Malasaña, 36

Ochentagrados is a very special place in the heart of our lovely neighborhood; Malasaña. The walk from Mad4You Hostel is around 5 minutes and you will cross the alternative square called Plaza Dos de Mayo. Ochentagrados has a different interior design with high brick walls and different lights. Their menu only offers small hot- and cold plates and with more or less three dishes you will have enough for one person. We recommend the Salmorejo with parmesan ice cream and the truffle eggs with potatoes and ham. Also, order their house cocktail; Distinto de Verano. It is like Tinto de Verano (a typical Spanish drink, including red wine and soda) but with lemon foam on top. Delicious!

Market: Mercado San Ildefonso – Calle Fuencarral, 57

Madrid is full of the most amazing food markets. They give you the freedom to walk around, with a drink in your hand, and checking out which stand offers the best-looking food. Within a 8 minute walking distance from Mad4You Hostel you can find Mercado San Ildefonso. This food market boasts three floors with delicious food and drinks. You will be able to choose from fifteen different stands, three bars and even have access to two terraces. We recommend you to mainly focus on the first floor where there is a broad variety of food available. We are fan of the meat stand and love the grilled sirloin or the steak tartar with foie. Also the stand with Spanish croquetas is a place to stop and order.

Fancy: Gamchulo – Calle Zurbano, 13

Sometimes hostel travelers are in the mood for something fancy. We are considered as travelers on a low budget but this does not mean we do not like to spend a little more once in a while and really treat ourselves. Therefore, we recommend the small, cozy and high class bar/restaurant: Gamchulo. Their specialty is a surf and turf dish, after which the place got its name ¨gamchulo.¨ Besides that, we recommend you to try their delicious butter fish sashimi with truffle and the red tuna tartar. Order a glass of Rueda wine, such as Perroverde, and your gastronomic nights will be one not to forget soon.

We hope we have awakened your appetite and that you will be joining us very soon here in Madrid for some delicious food. Spain has one of the best food in the world and that a visit just focused on food is already a feast.
